  1. About Xtimelog
  2. -------------

  4. Xtimelog is a Windows 3.X application. You will need to be running
  5. Windows 3.0 or 3.1 to use Xtimelog.
  6.  
  7. Xtimelog provides a way to create and maintain a database of your time
  8. usage on a number of projects. A Xtimelog database consists of a set
  9. of projects that you create and name. Each project will collect a set of
  10. work sessions as you use Xtimelog. A work session is created in a
  11. project when you "Punch In" on that project. The session is completed
  12. when you punch out. The database is kept on disk so no data is lost
  13. if you turn off the computer, exit Xtimelog or even exit Windows. The
  14. worst that can happen is that you remain "Punched In" until you run
  15. Xtimelog again and "Punch Out".

  17. Xtimelog provides several report formats that can either be sent to
  18. the printer or to a .txt file. You can inport the .txt file into your
  19. favorite word processor to create invoices, monthly reports etc.

  21. Xtimelog can also be a Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) server.
  22. This allows you to write spreadsheets that can extract the total
  23. hours worked on each project into a cell on the spreadsheet. (at this
  24. time Exatech has only verified that DDE works for Microsoft Excel. We
  25. would be interested to know if it works for other Windows
  26. spreadsheet programs).

  28. Xtimelog also allows you to edit your project histories in cases such
  29. as where you forget to "Punch Out".
  30.  
  31. Xtimelog Installation
  32. --------------------

  34. The complete Xtimelog system consists this readme file, XTIMELOG.EXE
  35. and XTIMELOG.HLP. In addition, you will find COMMDLG.DLL and DDEML.DLL
  36. on this diskette. These last two files are Microsoft dynamic link
  37. libraries that are distributed with MS Windows 3.1. If you are
  38. running MS Windows 3.1, you should delete the two DLL's provided here
  39. and save the disk space. But if you are still running Windows 3.0 you
  40. must keep them in order to run Xtimelog.

  42. Installation consists of copying these files to a directory
  43. on your hard disk. Then you have several options to run Xtimelog.

  45. 1. You can run Xtimelog from the Windows File Manager by selecting
  46.    XTIMELOG.EXE and using the File Manager's "File" menu "Run" menu.

  48. 2. Or you can double click XTIMELOG.EXE directly in the File Manager
  49.    Window.

  51. 3. A better way to run Xtimelog is to install it in your Startup
  52.    Program Group.  You can do this by dragging XTIMELOG.EXE from the
  53.    File Manager and dropping it into your Startup Group in the
  54.    Program Manager. Then Xtimelog will start up every time you start
  55.    Windows.

  57. 4. Finally you can install Xtimelog the hard way by choosing the StartUp
  58.    Program Group Icon in the Program Manager window. Then
  59.    choose the "New..." item in the Program Manager's File menu. Then
  60.    a dialog box will appear with  two selection buttons. Make sure
  61.    the one that is labeled "Program Item" is selected. Then press
  62.    the OK button.

  64.    Another dialog box will then appear prompting you for the Program
  65.    Item Properties. Assuming you placed XTIMELOG.EXE and the other
  66.    files in the directory, C:\Xtimelog the values you enter for
  67.    these properties should be:

  69.              Property Name          Property value you enter
  70.  
  71.              Description            Xtimelog
  72.              Command Line           c:\XTIMELOG\XTIMELOG.exe
  73.              Working Directory      c:\XTIMELOG

  75.    When you have entered these property values, press OK. The
  76.    Xtimelog Icon will then appear in the Startup Program Group. You
  77.    can then run Xtimelog  by double clicking this icon.

  79.    Because Xtimelog is in your Startup Group, Xtimelog will now be started
  80.    automatically whenever you start Windows.

  85. Xtimelog is not a complex application such as a word processor or a 
  86. spreadsheet. We believe that a printed manual would be redundant.
  87.  
  88. Pressing the F1 function key or choosing the first item on the Help
  89. menu will take you into the Xtimelog help system. You could make a
  90. printed manual by using  Help to print out the help topics. For instance,
  91. there is a help topic for each menu item. We believe that everything one
  92. needs to know about Xtimelog is in the help topics.

  94. We suggest starting with the Overview and Database topics and then
  95. proceeding to read the descriptions of the Main Window Buttons and Controls
  96. followed by the Pulldown Menu Items. Leave the Miscellaneous topics until
  97. later. Then begin to experiment with Xtimelog.

  100. Exatech know so that future versions might come with a better manual.
